Texas certificates issued since 1986 are issued based upon Excet or TExES examinations. NCLB (HQ) report is required from previous school district. • Applicants with an out of state certificate must successfully pass the Texas Examination of Educator Standards (TExES) within twelve months from the date of employment. • If you are new to the teaching profession or are teaching elementary students EC-6 for the first time, you must follow the new guidelines set forth by the United States Department of Education (USDE) regarding the Highly Qualified Teacher (HQT) status of elementary teachers EC-6. This ruling affects teachers who are new • Special Education teachers to the profession as of the 2009-2010 school year. If applying for an elementary EC-6 opening, an applicant who has just the 4-8 mathematics, 4-8 Mathematics, 4-8 Science, 4-8 ELA, 4-8 Reading, or 4-8 Social Studies certificate must now have passed one of the following TExES exams: EC-4 Generalist, 4-8 Generalist or EC-6 Generalist. For HQT purposes, the TEA is allowing the EC-4 TExES Generalist test to count as HQ for teachers who teach 6th graders. new • Elementary Art, Music, and PE positions require specific certification in corresponding subject area. to the profession now must also have one of the TExES Generalist exams passed along with the SPED EC-12 TExES exam. • Secondary Teachers, • Applicants going through an Alternative Certification plan must show proof of passing the content exam and meet the guidelines mentioned above. You must be eligible for a one year probationary certificate upon employment. You must successfully complete all requirements to be eligible for a standard certificate within twelve months from the date of employment. grades 7-12, will still follow the same competency exams for certification to be deemed highly qualified. For example, a teacher, who is new to the profession and who has passed the TExES 4-8 Math exam, would still be considered Highly Qualified in math for grades 7-8. All level Art and Music exams still demonstrate subject competency for grades 7-12. The EC-12 Special Education exam may still demonstrate subject competency in reading and math for grades 7- 8. • Photocopies of SBEC certificate and test scores, and all college transcripts must be uploaded into online applicant folder.
