As of the 2014-15 school year, Florida's 74 school districts were serving over 2,700,00 students, making Florida home to some of the largest school districts in the country. Currently, Florida's goals for education involve improving student proficiency and achievement with expanded learning opportunities, with the hopes that it will help students be engaged and prepared for college and careers. Why teach in Florida? If you like the beach, Florida is home to about 1,300 miles of coastline, and at any given point you're only about 60 miles from the ocean. In addition, Florida is home to a diverse ecology of plant and marine life.
Florida has spearheaded many initiatives in education over the past few years. Among them is a focus on Early Learning, to ensure children are ready and able to attend school. In addition, Florida has taken great measures to implement personalized, and competency-based learning, specifically at Lake, Pinellas and Seminole County schools. Florida launched a pilot program in 2016, to explore flexible learning pathways for students, on a mission to personalized education for its students. And as of January 2018, legislation was approved by a Florida House Education panel for a bill that would enable a personalized learning pilot in every district.
